Esta obra ha sido publicada en idioma español bajo diversos títulos: Las cuitas de Werther, Las penas de Werther, Las penas del joven Werther, Las desventuras de Werther o Las pasiones de Werther, entre otros. Aquí se ha utilizado el título "Las penas del joven Werther" por ser el más extendido y por tanto el más fácilmente identificable, si bien la traducción aquí publicada corresponde con la primera traducción original de la obra, realizada por D. Jose Mor de Fuentes en 1835 y cuyo título era Las cuitas de Werther.
